ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Two brothers who were amputated by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in southeastern Mosul explained the crimes the extremist group committed against them.

Ahmed and Mohammed are the nicknames of two brothers from the town of Nimrud.

They covered half of their faces during the interview with Kurdistan24 correspondent Hemin Dalo for the safety of their father whose whereabouts remain unknown.

“We were accused of stealing,” Ahmed told Kurdistan24. “First, IS decided to execute both of us, but then a Saudi IS prosecutor lightened the punishment to amputation.”

Ahmed saved the footage of his amputation as a memory of the militant group’s oppression.

“I don’t know why I saved the footage, but I felt I had to keep it as a bitter memory of IS’ crimes,” he said.

IS punished civilians in public and then published footage online to plant fear in the hearts of people, according to Ahmed.

The insurgent group emerged in Mosul in June 2014.

Shortly afterward, IS expanded to other provinces of Iraq including Nineveh, Salahaddin, Diyala, and Anbar.

Since then, the group lost most of the territory it once controlled and continues to shrink, especially after Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched the Mosul military operation on Oct. 17.
