TORONTO, Canada (Kurdistan24) – A documentary series by VICE, filmed in the Kurdistan Region, has been released on Tuesday starting with the first episode “Fighting ISIS.”

The film series on HBO was awarded three Emmy nominations this year, including the award for Outstanding Series or Special.

VICE revealed that the other two episodes in the documentary series would be released later this week.

According to VICE on their official website, the series follows the recent conflict in Iraq involving the Islamic State (IS).

Ben Anderson is the correspondent who travels exclusively to three front lines in the country where Kurds, Sunnis, and Shias are battling IS.

Additionally, Anderson visits Syria to meet with the Russian military forces as well as meet with IS fighters under Peshmerga captivity.

The correspondent also sits with US policy makers “about how the situation in Iraq spun out of control.”

The film points to the liberation of Iraq as an attempt at building “democracy that posed no threat to the United States, or the rest of the world.”

However, the series also aims to dissect how the country has collapsed 13 years later and is on the brink of being divided into three (Kurds, Sunnis, and Shias).

In one part of the film, Anderson sits with Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Masrour Barzani who discusses the division of Iraq.

Barzani agreed that Iraq has virtually been divided because it is “built on the wrong foundations.”

The Chancellor added that the country is a “failed state,” pointing to the several different armed forces being created as examples.
