CLEVELAND, United States (Kurdistan24) – In a recent interview, a United States Senator expressed his support to the people of Kurdistan in their battle against the Islamic State (IS) and desire for independence.

At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, US Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee discussed his country’s backing of Kurdistan and Peshmerga forces.

“The people of Kurdistan we love and cherish, and the leadership of the Peshmerga has been so important in rounding out evil,” Sen. Corker stated.

“Kurdistan is obviously a region that is very, very important to the United States,” he added.

Corker also urged the Kurds to move “cautiously” toward independence pointing to the war with IS and instability in Baghdad as obstacles.

“People of Kurdistan have to choose their own way, but [independence is] something that should be looked at very slowly and cautiously because there’s so much right now to contend with,” he said.

“I’ve met with your President [and] Foreign Minister on many occasions and I’ve said the same thing,” the Senator explained.

“[There is] a lot of trouble right now in the region, maybe it makes sense to be cautious about how you move forward,” he continued.

The Tennessee representative also addressed the arming of Peshmerga and told Kurdistan24 that he has personally made sure Kurdish forces are receiving weapons.

“I’ve gone to actually check it out myself in Baghdad, but we’ve made sure that the weapons that we send to Kurdistan make it to Kurdistan,” Corker stated.

The Senator touched upon the financial support that the US is expected to provide in the fight against IS, and said that sending military support in a “prompt way” is a priority.
