WASHINGTON, United States (Kurdistan24) – In a recent interview, a US Congressman discussed the United States’ support for Kurdish independence.

Mark Meadows, a US Congressman for North Carolina’s 11th congressional district, told Kurdistan24 that Kurds deserve the support of the United States in their desire for independence.

“Being a nation that’s had independence in the past certainly those that are freedom loving folks are not only [deserving of] our support but, certainly, are ones we can get behind,” he said.

Meadows added that the US should back Kurds on their “journey” toward independence and support those allies “that embrace freedom.”

“Sometimes it’s a longer journey, sometimes it’s a journey that starts with just small steps, a true relationship that is built on mutual trust and respect,” he continued.

“We support those who look for freedom, look for independence, it’s [a relationship] that we can certainly look to come together and embrace,” the Congressman added.

Meadows also touched upon the relationship between Washington and Erbil, stating that he was hopeful the two could “minimize” any differences.

“We must have that natural dialogue that goes back and forth where we can discuss our differences and hopefully minimize those in a real way so that we can have a good relationship going forward,” he stated.

Additionally, the Congressman mentioned a possible change in the US' role in the Middle East with a new administration after the upcoming Presidential elections.

“As we start to see a shift in a new administration, I think what you’re going to see is a new shift to not only be strategically involved but to take a more proactive approach in the region,” Meadows concluded.
