IS threatens drone attacks on fans, players at 2018 World Cup in Russia
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A new propaganda video released by the Islamic State (IS) warns of a drone attack on players and fans at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Photos and videos spread on the extremist group’s social media pages reveal alleged plans by IS to carry out attacks at this summer’s prestigious tournament by dropping bombs at stadiums using drones.
In the videos, the militants are seen preparing and arming the drones with explosives including anti-tank rockets.
Elad Ezrachi, a cybersecurity expert, told the UK-based Daily Mail that the IS extremists are using an encrypted app called “Telegram” to detail the plans and explain how they intend to carry out the attacks.
“There is no doubt that this technology, if used by [IS] in terrorist attacks at the World Cup, can lead to catastrophic results,” he said.
Ezrachi noted that although the drones which IS are planning to use appear to be basic kinds usually used by filmmakers, the propaganda videos “suggest that these everyday devices will have deadly bombs attached to them.”
One of IS’ recent propaganda posters features footballing star Cristiano Ronaldo who is handcuffed and awaiting what seems to be imminent execution.
A few months ago, a poster including the phrase “target Russia” with Lionel Messi wounded, behind bars was released by the extremists.
Security services at the World Cup in Russia have warned that the tournament is a target for IS militants who have often mentioned the footballing event in online threats.
According to Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, meanwhile, the extremists may target the event in retaliation to President Vladimir Putin’s campaign against the group in Syria.
The 2018 World Cup will take place between June 14 to July 15.
