Elections commission: 95 percent of referendum preparations completed

All logistical and technical preparations have been undertaken in the Kurdistan Region and in Kurdish areas outside of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) administration.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Independent High Election and Referendum Commission (IHERC) announced that 95 percent of the preparations for the independence referendum polling day have been completed.

Head of the IHERC Handren Mohammed told Kurdistan 24 that the very final stages of the preparations for the independence referendum scheduled on Sep. 25 are underway.

"We are currently hiring and training employees to manage ballot stations on referendum day," Mohammed said, stating that 95 percent of the work has been completed.

"All logistical and technical preparations have been undertaken in the Kurdistan Region and in Kurdish areas outside of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) administration," Mohammed added.

The IHERC’s Kirkuk office officially opened on Tuesday, starting preparations to facilitate the voting process for the people in the province, including displaced persons living inside and outside camps, Dilsoz Abdulkareem, Deputy Head of the Kirkuk office, told Kurdistan 24.

On Sep. 5, the official campaign promoting the upcoming referendum on independence for the Kurdistan Region was launched and will go on until the 22nd of the month.

According to IHERC figures, 5.5 million people from the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistani areas outside of the KRG's administration, and in the Diaspora, are eligible to vote in the independence referendum.
