Kurdistan Parliament delegation to visit Iraqi Council of Representatives soon

An official from the Kurdistan Region Parliament on Sunday said a delegation of deputies would visit Baghdad soon to hold meetings with the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – An official from the Kurdistan Region Parliament on Sunday said a delegation of deputies would visit Baghdad soon to hold meetings with the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

“The Parliament of the Kurdistan Region will send a delegation to Baghdad to meet with officials in the Iraqi Council of Representatives,” Kurdistan Parliament Secretary Begard Talabani told reporters.

“The first objective of the visit is to create a climate conducive to the start of a real dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to find solutions for all controversial issues,” she added.

Talabani did not disclose the names of those within the delegation, the timing of the visit, or any other details.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the Federal Government of Iraq is expected to visit the Region soon to discuss the return of displaced persons and the upcoming elections, a source from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) told Kurdistan 24 on Sunday.

The trip will mark the first time Iraqi officials have visited Kurdistan since the referendum.

Tensions between the KRG and the Iraqi government have considerably increased following Kurdistan’s Sep. 25 independence referendum.

The historic vote received widespread support for secession from Iraq, but Baghdad refused to recognize the results and instead responded by imposing collective punitive measures against Kurdistan, including the use of military force in disputed areas.

The KRG has shown its flexibility, offering to freeze the results of the referendum, but Baghdad demands a full annulment as well as the handover of airports and border crossings as a precondition for the start of negotiations.
