Barzani sends condolences to earthquake victims, survivors

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the border areas between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Rojhalat killing over 300 people.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The outgoing Kurdistan Region President sends condolences to the people affected by the earthquake in the Kurdistan Region and Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhelat).

Masoud Barzani in a statement on Monday expressed his sympathy with the victims of the earthquake that hit the Kurdistan Region and Rojhelat cities on Sunday night.

“With great sadness due to the earthquake in the provinces of Halabja and Kirmanshah and other areas of Darbandikhan, Qasri Shirin, Sarpul Zahab last night, hundreds of people died and thousands were wounded,” Barzani said.

“I offer my condolences to the families of the victims and the people in the areas affected by last night’s earthquake and wish a speedy recovery for the injured,” Barzani added.

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake Sunday night hit the border areas between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Rojhalat killing over 400 people.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) the earthquake killed nine in the Kurdistan Region and injured 554 people.

On Monday, the KRG PM Nechirvan Barzani in a press conference said that the government does its best to help and support the people affected by the earthquake.

In Rojhalat, casualties were much higher due to their proximity to the epicenter, with over 300 people dead and more than 3,000 injured across the region, according to the Iranian state media.
