KRSC addresses security concerns in Kurdistan Region

The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) on Sunday revealed plans to improve the safety of the region amid growing security concerns.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) on Sunday revealed plans to improve the safety of the region amid growing security concerns.

“According to recent statistics, the rates of criminal activity in the cities and districts have been increasing, and this is raising concerns among our citizens,” a statement the KRSC released read.

The KRSC warned: “All entities and individuals who by shielding criminals and using judicial means lay the groundwork for the proliferation of criminal and unlawful activity.”

“The Security Council of the [Kurdistan] Region [with the aid of various official authorities] has started to implement the necessary actions to face the wrongdoers and criminals.”

In an effort to address possibilities of corruption, the KRSC noted that the Council “will be closely investigating all the steps we are taking to eliminate the unlawful activities being committed.”

“We ask of all bodies to be cooperative to maintain the Kurdistan Region’s exemplary security and stability conditions.”

The Security Council's measures come after multiple incidents caused concerns in the Kurdistan Region in general and the capital of Erbil in particular.

There were two cases of murder in the past two weeks, and there were previous quarrels between the individuals involved in each case, as investigations conducted by the Erbil Governorate Police Department indicated.

One of the cases concerned a Peshmerga who was a Lieutenant Colonel and was on his way home with his son when a man, with whom he had previously argued with, shot him in a brazen public attack.

Two weeks ago, two gunmen wearing military uniforms opened fire at the Erbil Appellate Court. The identities and motives of the shooters remain unknown.
