WATCH: Peshmerga repel IS suicide attack in northern Kirkuk

KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Islamic State (IS) on Sunday attacked Peshmerga front lines in northern Kirkuk but were thwarted as soldiers killed three jihadists according to a Kurdistan24 correspondent.

IS attempted to cross a Peshmerga front line near the K-1 air base located in northern Kirkuk with five suicide bombers, reported Kurdistan24 Correspondent Hemin Dalo.

The attack took place in the early morning at 2:45 a.m. local time, and clashes between Peshmerga and the IS extremists lasted two hours, Peshmerga Commander Hiwa Abdulla told Kurdistan24.

“Peshmerga fighters killed three of the IS suicide bombers while the other two jihadists detonated themselves,” Dalo said.

During the attack, two Peshmerga soldiers' lives were taken while six more were injured, according to Abdulla.

K-1 military base is located 15 km north of Kirkuk where US military advisers are also stationed. The IS suicide bombers shaved their beard and wore Peshmerga uniform to sneak into the Peshmerga base, but were stopped before entering, Abdulla added.

Hawija is located in western Kirkuk province. It has been under the control of the jihadist group since June 2014. The jihadists regularly attempt to cross Peshmerga front lines and enter the center of Kirkuk.
