Over 2,000 Iraqis killed, injured in September: UNAMI

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A total of 1,003 Iraqis were killed, and 1,159 wounded in September due to terrorism, violence, and armed conflicts in the country, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) reported on Saturday.

UNAMI released its monthly report about the number of casualties in Iraq during the month of September.

According to the report, 609 civilians had been killed, and 951 wounded.

Regarding the number of casualties related to the security forces in Iraq, UNAMI stated 394 personnel had been killed including Peshmerga, SWAT, and militia fighting alongside the Iraqi Army.

Moreover, a total of 208 security fighters were killed.

The number of security casualties does not include Anbar, the largest province in Iraq in terms of territory, which is located in the west of the country.

Baghdad was the worst affected region in the country with 1,127 civilian casualties (289 killed and 838 wounded).

In Nineveh 42 were killed and 55 wounded and in Salahaddin 23 were killed and 10 wounded.

Additionally, Kirkuk had 23 deaths and nine injuries while Babil had two losses and four injuries.

Based on the information of the Health Directorate in Anbar that UNAMI obtained, the province had a total of 254 civilian casualties with 219 deaths and 35 injuries.

The figures do not include the last two days of September as the report reflects statistics up to the 28th of the month.

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Jan Kubis said the casualty toll was “unacceptable.”

“It is a very sad state of affairs that the numbers of Iraqis killed and injured remain very high and unacceptable,” Kubis stated. “Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence.”

“The Holy month of Muharram has started, and I sincerely hope that the killings will stop during this month,” he concluded.
