PM Masrour Barzani hopes for 'unity and harmony' on anniversary of Jalal Talabani's passing

"On the third anniversary of the passing of Mam Jalal, I extend my respect and appreciation the struggle and the prominent role he played in Kurdistan and Iraq's political movement."

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, on Saturday expressed his hope that the anniversary of the passing of the late Kurdish leader and former president of Iraq would lead to "unity and harmony."

Prime Minister Barzani's statement came on the third anniversary of Jalal Talabani's death, the veteran politician who led the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and was the sixth President of Iraq since the country’s establishment in 1920.

The Prime Minister said, "On the third anniversary of the passing of Mam Jalal, I extend my respect and appreciation the struggle and the prominent role he played in Kurdistan and Iraq's political movement." He also recognized "the role of Bafel and Qubad (the sons of the late president) and the true successors of his path."

"I hope that the memory of Mam Jalal will motivate the unity and harmony of our people," Prime Minister Barzani added.

Talabani was elected as the president of Iraq in 2005 and reelected twice before leaving office in 2014 after a long treatment following a stroke in 2012.

On the third of October 2017, Talabani died in a hospital in the German capital Berlin, where he received medical treatment at 83.
