COVID-19: Iraq and Kurdistan Region record lowest infections in months

The Iraqi health ministry on Saturday reported nearly 1,800 new coronavirus cases, the lowest number it has recorded since late June.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Authorities in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq on Saturday reported a significant decrease in daily coronavirus infections, nearing 1,800 cases total.

The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Health said in a statement that it had conducted 4,688 new tests. It also said 361 tests had returned positive: 66 in Erbil province, 113 in Sulaimani, 176 in Duhok, and six in Halabja.

According to the ministry’s latest figures, the total number of infections in the Kurdistan Region has now reached 92,938, including 57,517 recoveries, and 2,977 deaths.

Iraq-wide Infections

At the same time, the Iraqi Ministry of Health and Environment mentioned that it had conducted 19,883 tests in 24 hours and noted that 1,786 had come back positive. It also reported 42 fatalities due to the highly contagious disease during the same period.

The statement pointed out that "in the past 24 hours no new deaths have been recorded in 9 provinces: Najaf, Diyala, Wasit, Maysan, Diwaniyah, Dhi-Qar, Anbar, Muthanna, and Salahuddin”

According to official data, the total number of infections in Iraq has reached 533,555, including 463,040 recoveries, and 11,925 deaths.
