Kurdistan strongly condemns ‘terrorist’ attack in Egypt which killed over 230 people

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Safeen Dizayee strictly condemned the “terrorist” attack which targeted worshippers in Egypt’s Sinai mosque on Friday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Safeen Dizayee strictly condemned the “terrorist” attack which targeted worshippers in Egypt’s Sinai mosque on Friday.

Dizayee labeled the assault a “barbaric attack,” and extended the KRG’s condolences and those of the people of the Kurdistan Region to Egypt, wishing the wounded a speedy recovery.

The attack killed over 230 people at a mosque in North Sinai.

According to witnesses and state media, the suspects detonated a bomb and opened fire on worshippers in the deadliest such attack in Egypt’s modern history.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but Egyptian security forces have fought an affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) mainly in the desert region where the group has killed hundreds of soldiers and police.

Worshippers were completing their Friday prayers at the mosque when a bomb detonated. About 40 gunmen set up positions outside the mosque with vehicles, opening fire from different directions as people tried to escape, witnesses told Reuters.

“Four groups of armed men attacked the worshippers inside the mosque after Friday prayers. Two groups were firing at ambulances to deter them,” Mohammed, a witness, said.

The attack killed 235 people and wounded 109 more, according to the public prosecutor’s office.

“The armed forces and the police will avenge our martyrs and restore security and stability with the utmost force,” Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said in a televised address.

“What is happening is an attempt to stop us from our efforts in the fight against terrorism, to destroy our efforts to stop the terrible criminal plan that aims to destroy what is left of our region,” he added.
