VIDEO: Peshmerga weapons depot in Duhok catches fire, third incident in a week

Similar incidents took place at Peshmerga depots in Sulaimani and Erbil in the past two days.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A weapons depot belonging to the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces caught fire in Duhok Province.

Bewar Abdulaziz, the spokesperson of Duhok Civil Defense, told a local Kurdish media outlet that the Peshmerga weapons warehouse caught fire in the Aluka area, in western Duhok.

Civil Defense teams have been deployed to the area but are unable to control the fire due to the risk of explosives, Abdulaziz told Xendan.

A Peshmerga Commander at the scene of the incident, Brigadier Bahjat, told reporters the explosion and fire at the weapons depot did not result in any Peshmerga or civilian casualties.

He said the cause of the accident is unclear, noting special teams will carry out investigations into the matter.

Brigadier Bahjat added that the weapons depot is guarded by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)-trained Syrian Kurdish Peshmerga forces, known as Rojava Peshmerga.

Meanwhile, a late-night fire broke out at a weapons depot in Sulaimani Province on Monday, wounding four Peshmerga fighters.

On June 30, Erbil witnessed a similar incident in the sub-district of Baharka, the third weapon warehouse fire in the capital in less than three years.
