ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region's Parliament on Friday approved the referendum on the independence as a senior Kurdish official expressed hope that the international community would respect the people’s decision.
The Kurdistan Region's Parliament was reactivated after being dismantled two years ago due to political tensions. The first session of Parliament was dedicated to the upcoming referendum scheduled for Sep. 25.
The Parliament officially requested the Independent High Elections and Referendum Commission (IHERC) make preparations and hold the referendum on time.
Following the approval of Parliament, the people of the Kurdistan Region poured into the streets and expressed their excitement for the Parliament's backing for the referendum.
In a statement on his official Twitter account, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Masrour Barzani congratulated the people for the ‘historic parliamentary session’ which approved the independence referendum.
“We expect the international community to respect decisions made by the people of Kurdistan. Opposing them defies basic universal principles,” Barzani tweeted.
“Nothing is more legitimate than the vote of the people, especially one determined through democratic and peaceful means,” the Chancellor stated in another tweet.
The Kurdish leadership has decided to move forward with the vote despite of the opposition of Baghdad, neighboring countries, and the US regarding the timing.
Independence has been a long-awaited dream for Kurds all across the globe. The Kurds are believed to be the largest stateless nation in the world.
