US embassy in Iraq warns about possible protests regarding Jerusalem recognition

The US Embassy and Consulate in Iraq on Wednesday sent a security message regarding possible protests to America's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Isreal.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) - The US Embassy and Consulate in Iraq on Wednesday sent a security message regarding possible protests to America's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Embassy warned American citizens that the United States' decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital and relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city may spark protests.

The Consulate stated that some of the protests "have the potential to become violent."

The US Embassy Baghdad reminded US citizens in Iraq to be cautious and aware of personal security.

The announcement urged American citizens to review their personal security plans.

"Remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news for updates," it said.

"Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities," the statement added.

"Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations," the announcement concluded.

The embassy emphasized that US citizens remain at high risk of kidnapping and terrorist violence in Iraq.

Americans can register for a program called Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and make it easier to be located in an emergency.

The embassy frequently warns US citizens to maintain a heightened sense of security awareness and take appropriate measures to enhance their personal security at all times when living and working in Iraq.

Last month, the US Mission Iraq warned that the Baghdad Mall may be the target of a terrorist attack and advised American citizens to avoid the shopping center.
