Explosion hits Iraq’s Tikrit city

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – A blast on Saturday targeted the city of Tikrit in Salahuddin Province, killing one, a source at the scene said.

The car bomb detonated on Doctors Street—located in the center of Tikrit—killing at least one and damaging nearby properties, a security source told Kurdistan 24.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it is similar to previous assaults carried out by the Islamic State (IS) in the region.

Tikrit is a predominantly Sunni city. The last attack in the area was in 2016 when a car bomb targeted the entrance to the town. IS later claimed responsibility for the violence.

The attack occurred at a time when Iraqi forces continue their latest campaign to clear the desert areas in the far west of the country from the extremist group.
