KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Islamic State (IS) on Tuesday night attacked Peshmerga soldiers in Khurmatu area while attempting to cross the defense line, but were repelled by Kurdish forces.

The attack took place at 11:00 am in Zarga Village located on the Khurmatu front line. The clashes went on for hours a Peshmerga Commander told Kurdistan24 during a live feed interview.

Two Peshmerga soldiers died, and six more were injured while seven of the jihadist militants were killed, the commander added.

It is the third attack carried out by the jihadist group on Peshmerga front lines in the past month.

The Commander also mentioned that Peshmerga soldiers have witnessed IS members taking the bodies of their fallen militants with them at the end of the fight.

He highlighted the support of Khurmatu Peshmerga volunteers in the area who helped during the clashes with IS.

The group took over Mosul and large swaths of territory in June 2014. Since then, the group has lost control of most of the areas it once occupied and continues to shrink in Mosul and surrounded areas.
