ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) - Islamic State (IS) killed 140 Mosul civilians on Monday and Tuesday after arresting them while attempting to escape from the jihadist group, Kurdistan Region Counter Terrorism (CT) announced on Friday.
IS killed desperate civilians running to areas liberated by the Iraqi forces, the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) official tweeted on its official account.
KRSC also mentioned that IS later hanged detainees on electoral poles in Eslah Zirayi and Tanak Neighborhoods located in the west of Mosul.
IS has also reportedly thrown some of the dead bodies of the civilians in the trenches dug between IS and Iraqi forces.
On October 17, 2016, Iraqi and Kurdish forces launched a military operation to liberate Mosul from the extremist group.
The operation is ongoing in the west of Mosul as the Iraqi forces attempt to eradicate the area from the IS.
Iraqi civilian casualties in Mosul have concerned most of the international human rights organizations.
The Prime Minister of Iraq Haider Al-Abadi had previously mentioned that the life of civilians in Mosul is a priority for the Iraqi troops.
According to the monthly civilian casualty report of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 548 civilians were killed and 567 more were injured in Iraq during the month of March.
