Kurdistan Region President meets with Qatar top officials

President of the autonomous Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, met on Tuesday with Qatar’s top officials in Doha to discuss ties between the two nations.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – President of the autonomous Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, met on Tuesday with Qatar’s top officials in Doha to discuss ties between the two nations. 

On his first official trip to Qatar, Barzani met separately with Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister, and with Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) core group meeting.

Officials and experts around the world attend the conference to discuss security developments in the Middle East, Europe, and other parts of the globe.

In his meeting with Qatari Prime Minister Bin-Khalifa, Barzani talked about recent events and developments in the area and their impact. The two had an in-depth exchange about Erbil-Baghdad ties as well as the relationship of Qatar with both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Barzani and Bin-Khalifa also explored trade and investment opportunities between the Kurdistan Region and Qatar.

On the same day, Barzani met with Foreign Affairs Minister Abdulrahman Al Thani, where they discussed the security and political circumstances in Iraq.

Barzani and Abdulrahman shed light on the progress achieved between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi federal government, even discussing entry points for private sector investment in the Kurdistan Region as it becomes more stable and prosperous. They also held talks on establishing Qatar’s General Consulate in the Kurdistan Region.

In a meeting where Qatar’s Ambassador to Iraq and the Iraqi Ambassador in Doha attended, Barzani warned of the Syrian situation and how it could impact neighboring countries in a negative way as they discussed the general security situation in the region.

The Munich Security Conference holds two core group meetings, with the first one taking place in Cairo (October 26-28), and the second one happening in Doha (October 28-29).

The events brings together senior decision-makers and experts from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and other parts of the world to discuss the many urgent crises in the region, to explore paths towards de-escalation, and to identify possible areas for regional cooperation.
