Referendum Council announces pact guaranteeing rights of components in Kurdistan state

Kurdistan’s religious and ethnic components will be protected and their rights will be guaranteed.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s High Council for the Independence Referendum on Sunday announced a pact that would guarantee the rights of religious and ethnic components in the Region within a new independent Kurdish state.

During a press conference, the High Council for the Independence Referendum announced the formation of a political pact which would protect the rights of components.

Among the attendees at the press conference were representatives of the Kurdistan Region’s religious and ethnic components in the Parliament.

Ibrahim Khalil, a Member of the High Council for the Independence Referendum, stated the pact was meant to reassure the rights of religious and ethnic components in a new state of Kurdistan was respected.

According to Khalil, the pact consists of 15 articles which include the implementation of federalism in the future state of Kurdistan. He also added the components would be real partners within an independent Kurdistan.

The High Council for the Independence Referendum member also revealed the agreement would be sent to the Kurdistan Region Parliament for endorsement after further discussion and approval from the Council.

“The pact is written in Arabic at the request of the components and will be translated into Kurdish, English, Turkmen, Assyrian, and Armenian,” he said.

In previous statements, the President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani has reiterated that the rights of religious and ethnic components would be protected and guaranteed in an independent Kurdistan.

He also emphasized a future Kurdistan state would not only be for Kurds exclusively but would be a federal state without any discrimination between its components.
