KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) flags along with those of jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan were seen on Sunday raised in one of the neighborhoods of the Kurdistan Region’s Kirkuk Province.

The flags were hoisted next to the Kurdistan national flag in the round square of Ahmedi Khani, located north of Kirkuk city, according to Kurdistan24 correspondent Hemin Dalo.

Kurdistan24 contacted PKK commanders in the area.

However, they mentioned they were not aware of the case, and the flags were probably raised by their supporters in the city.

So far, no officials have commented on the case.

Tensions between the PKK and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) escalated following clashes on March 3, 2017, between the Peshmerga and a PKK-affiliate group in Sinjar (Shingal).

The violence resulted in several casualties from both sides.

The PKK is labeled a “terrorist” organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.
