HIGHLIGHTS: Dalkurd beat Östersunds 3-0 in first ever Swedish topflight win

Fans will remember the win as a historic one, Dalkurd’s first in the Swedish topflight.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish-affiliated Swedish football team Dalkurd FF on Sunday recorded their first win in the Swedish first division after beating opponents Östersunds FK 3-0 at the Gavlevallen stadium in Gävle, Sweden.

Forward Mohamed Turay opened the scoring in the 35th minute after his strike from 18-yards trickled into the back of the net. Fans will remember the goal as a historic one, Dalkurd’s first in the Swedish topflight.

Midfielder Oliver Berg added a second goal shortly after the start of the second-half on 55 minutes before Turay was on target again in the 84th minute, sweeping home the rebound after the Östersunds goalkeeper saved a long-range shot from Berg.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Dalkurd captain Rawez Lawan described Sunday’s win as “a perfect match.”

“We had a good tactical plan,” he said, adding goalscorer Turay “changed the complexion of the match with his performance.”

“I do not know how much he ran today. He scored two goals and was a crucial part of our win,” Lawan added.

The win was a positive reaction following the club’s 2-0 loss last week to AIK in their first match since being promoted to Sweden’s top-tier Allsvenskan league.

Dalkurd’s next league match is away to Haecken on April 14.

Dalkurd, based in the Swedish city of Borlänge, was founded on Sep. 26, 2004, by nine Kurdish immigrants as a social project to keep children distracted from the vices of the streets.

The club has since built academies in both Sweden, and the Kurdistan Region as Dalkurd takes pride in being “born with a social responsibility,” according to their website.

The team’s colors are symbolic of Kurdistan, with the Kurdish flag included in the crest on their shirts.

The club has bull-dozed its way up the ranks of Swedish football since their 2005 introduction in Tier Seven, winning five promotions in their first five seasons.

With promotion into the first level of Swedish football, Dalkurd now faces the prospect of UEFA Champions League or Europa League qualification—an opportunity awarded to the top three teams in the Allsvenskan league.
