September Revolution honored by top Kurdistan Region officials

Top officials from the Kurdistan Region on Friday commemorated the 59th anniversary of the September Revolution, launched to combat oppression against Iraqi Kurds and an important step toward their autonomy.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Top officials from the Kurdistan Region on Friday commemorated the 59th anniversary of the September Revolution, launched to combat oppression against Iraqi Kurds and an important step toward their autonomy.

Also known as the First Iraqi-Kurdish War, it was a 9-year-long struggle spearheaded by the late founding leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Mustafa Barzani.

Almost 60 years ago, said his son and current head of the party, Masoud Barzani, “the biggest political, social, and military revolution was launched in defense of the just rights of Kurdish people.”

He said in a statement that the achievements of the Kurdistan Region are the “extension and result of the September Revolution’s strength and comprehensiveness.”

Barzani explained that Kurds from a wide range of cities, towns, and villages responded to the call of the revolution in its various forms and “brought back self-confidence and will to the Kurdish people,” and it proved that the enemies of the Kurdish people could not ultimately win through “marginalization, tyranny, and coercion.”

His comments echoed those made earlier in the day by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

IN a separate statement, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said, “The September Revolution was the rejection of all of that oppression, tyranny, and bitter reality that was imposed on the Kurdish people,”

“The best lesson we can learn is to unite under one umbrella and for the sake of one goal as the only way of reaching to our shared goal,” he added, concluding his message by “saluting all those Peshmerga heroes who sacrificed themselves for Kurdistan.”
