Workers allegedly find $10 million under Mosul University rubble: Source

Workers reportedly discovered some US $10 million, hidden under rubble from the Mosul University while doing construction work on campus, a security source said on Thursday.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Workers reportedly discovered some US $10 million, hidden under rubble from the Mosul University while doing construction work on campus, a security source said on Thursday.

The massive stash of money belonged to the Islamic State (IS), who were in control of the country’s second-largest city for years, a security source from Mosul alleged while speaking with local Iraqi media.

“The workers who are working on reconstructing the ruined buildings of Mosul University found the money,” the source said according to Iraqi al-Fallujah TV channel and Qatari newspaper based in London, al-Arabi al-Jadeed, adding the cash is now in the hands of the Nineveh administration.

Following the emergence of the jihadist group in 2014 and the fall of Mosul, IS used the Mosul University campuses as its Finance Ministry.

During the liberation process, the intense fight between the Iraqi forces and IS militants considerably damaged the infrastructure of the city and its University.

Iraqi forces launched the military operation to liberate Mosul in Oct. 2016 and re-took control over the city on July 21, 2017.
