KRG’s DFR reveals agenda for Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Germany

Bilateral relations between Kurdistan and Germany, the latest political and security developments in the region, and the fight against the Islamic State (IS) are a few things Prime Minister Barzani will address during his trip.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Department of Foreign Affairs (DFR) on Saturday released the agenda for the Prime Minister’s visit to Germany next week.

KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani is set to visit Germany where he will meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday.

In a statement released on its website, the KRG’s DFR revealed a detailed agenda of Prime Minister Barzani’s trip.

During his visit, the KRG Prime Minister will meet Merkel, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, Minister of Defense Ursula von der Leyen, and also visit the German Federal Parliament, the DFR statement said.

Bilateral relations between Kurdistan and Germany, the latest political and security developments in the region, and the fight against the Islamic State (IS) are a few things Prime Minister Barzani will address during his trip.

“The situation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees, and a mechanism for resolving issues between Erbil and Baghdad” will also be discussed, the DFR statement continued.

The Prime Minister will also “reiterate the KRG’s position for resolving all disputes [with Iraq] through peaceful means,” the statement added.

German Deputy Government Spokesman Georg Streiter announced the visit on Friday, and a senior source from the KRG Prime Minister’s office confirmed the news with Kurdistan 24.

The two leaders will discuss the fight against IS as well as Germany’s involvement in the region, Streiter told German news agency DPA.

Last Tuesday, the German Parliament extended the Bundeswehr’s—who are involved in assisting Kurdish Peshmerga—training mission in Kurdistan.
