An automobile collision in the Kurdistan Region capital on Tuesday caused an explosion, killing one person.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – An automobile collision in the Kurdistan Region capital on Tuesday caused an explosion, killing one person, Head of the Erbil Asayish (Security) told Kurdistan 24.

The incident was not terror-related and is under investigation, Head of Erbil Asayish Tariq Nori stated.

Nori added that security forces found no explosive material at the site of the incident.

In 2017, vehicle-related incidents in the Kurdistan Region killed 698 people and injured 249 others, according to figures released by the traffic directorate in January 2018.

The year before, 817 people were killed and another 1,188 wounded.

Statistics of car accidents in 2018 have not yet been released.

A total of 1,498,155 traffic violations were logged for 2017, and 4,410 car accidents. Reckless driving is considered to be the primary security risk in the region.

While drivers complain about the quality of roads, traffic police say speeding remains the leading cause of accidents.
