International coalition military delegation arrives in Rojava

A military delegation of the international coalition arrived in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) on Monday

QAMISHLO, Syrian Kurdistan (K24) -  A military delegation from the international coalition arrived in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) on Monday.

In addition to four military vehicles crossing the Kurdistan Region border to Rojava, the delegation was accompanied by 30 SUVs carrying weapons.

A K24 reporter on the Peshkhabour border crossing between Kurdistan Region and Rojava said that the delegation moved towards Rmeilan, where a US airbase was constructed two months ago.

The international coalition delegation's visit to Rojava comes a week after the US envoy's visit to Kurdish-controlled northern Syria. This appears to be the first declared trip to Syrian territory by an Obama administration official in three years.

US envoy to the coalition against the Islamic State (IS) Brett McGurk said he aimed to review the fight against the group that controls swathes of Syria and Iraq.

The trip may anger neighbouring Turkey who is alarmed by the growing sway of Syrian Kurds, fearing it could fuel separatism among its Kurdish population.

The Syrian Kurds have established control over extensive areas of northern Syria ever since the country erupted into civil war in 2011, and their YPG militia has become an important partner in the US-led coalition against IS.
