10-man Barcelona remain undefeated after El Clasico draw with Real Madrid

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Spanish league leaders Barcelona and rivals Real Madrid settled for a 2-2 draw on Sunday in the 271st all-time El Clasico meeting at the Camp Nou stadium in Spain.

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez opened the scoring after 10 minutes with an emphatic finish from six yards out, but Real Madrid equalized four minutes later through Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The strike was the forward’s 25th La Liga goal of the season.

Barcelona had a player sent off just before the half-time break when defender Sergi Roberto was given his marching orders for violent conduct, but the La Liga leaders did not let their heads drop and took the lead through Lionel Messi’s powerful strike shortly after the restart.

Real Madrid responded through Gareth Bale who had been quiet in the match but produced a moment of brilliance, guiding a curling shot into the top corner to level the score at 2-2.

Madrid began the season in poor form, dropping as low as eighth place in the table, and were unable to defend the crown which they won during the 2016/17 season. They are currently in third-place.

Barcelona, meanwhile, has been top of La Liga since the third game week, winning their 25th title.

Despite losing out on the Spanish league trophy to Barcelona, Real Madrid will be upbeat about their third successive UEFA Champions League Final which will be played against English side Liverpool on May 26 in Kiev, Ukraine.
