World Cup: England through to quarterfinals after shootout win over Colombia

England is into the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout win over Colombia on Tuesday.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – England is into the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout win over Colombia on Tuesday.

Colombia was lucky not to have had a player sent off in the first-half after an altercation between Wilmar Barrios and England’s Jordan Henderson.

Video replays appeared to show Barrios headbutting Henderson, but the Colombian only received a yellow.

Shortly after the start of the second-half, England was awarded a penalty which striker Harry Kane converted. The English captain leads the tournament’s goal scoring chart with six goals from three matches.

Colombia’s Yerry Mina scored a late equalizer deep into stoppage time to force extra time.

The match went to a shootout with England coming out on top 4-3.

In Tuesday’s other Round of 16 match, Sweden defeated Switzerland by a single goal to advance in the tournament.

A second-half Emil Forsberg strike on 66 minutes was enough to win the match for the Swedes. The Swiss ended the game with 10 men after Michael Lang was sent off in stoppage time.

Sweden will play England in the quarterfinals on July 7 at 5:00 p.m. Erbil time.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup takes place between June 14 and July 15 with 32 teams from five different confederations competing.

Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Peru, Costa Rica, Tunisia, Panama, Poland, Iran, Australia, Nigeria, Iceland, South Korea, Germany, Senegal, Poland, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, Mexico, Japan, Switzerland, and Colombia have been eliminated from the tournament.

The following teams will play in the quarterfinals: France vs. Uruguay, Brazil vs. Belgium, Russia vs. Croatia, and Sweden vs. England.

The final will be played on July 15 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow at 6:00 p.m. Erbil time.
