VIDEO German Consul: Germany to support development of Kurdistan Region Post-IS

The German Consul General states that Kurdistan Region and Germany enjoy "excellent relations" that would be sustained in the post-Islamic State (IS) era.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The German Consul General states that Kurdistan Region and Germany enjoy "excellent relations" that would be sustained in the post-Islamic State (IS) era.

Marc Eichhorn, the German Consul General in Erbil, in an interview with Kurdistan24 on Monday said that the bilateral relations between Germany and Kurdistan Region are excellent, adding that his country is ready to support the Region after the defeat of IS.

The German diplomat explained that he had the easiest time working with KRG due to the government's openness, friendliness and the will to cooperate.

Regarding the war against the IS, he added that, “We are in the final terms in defeating Daesh [Arabic name for IS] with weapons; rockets and arms of any kind,” stating that “In the future, we have to fight with peaceful [means] to create a better future for our children.”

He added that “German government stands ready to support Kurdistan Region in this endeavor to continue the development of the Region after the defeat of IS."

The decision of people of Kurdistan [about independence] is an internal matter, Eichhorn said, adding that although Germany has its position with regard to the referendum and independence, it is up to the people of Kurdistan to decide how they are going to shape the future.

“Germany is fine with everything which is peaceful and that has the consent of everybody," Eichhorn concluded.

Germany is one of the countries involved in the US-led anti-IS coalition that has provided military and humanitarian support for the Kurdistan Region in the battle to defeat IS extremists and help the Region deal with the humanitarian crisis due to the influx of 1.8 million displaced people and refugees.
