ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A shop at a market in the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani province is attracting customers for its sale of traditional embroidered bags and clothing.

Many female customers, in particular, across the Kurdistan Region visit the market to look for traditional Kurdish handbags, reviving demand for Kurdish cultural bags, clothing, and household items.

The “Hawza Wsihkaka,” or “Dry Pond” market, is known for its sale of cultural artifacts such as rugs, bags, and many common Kurdish goods with designs that date back over 50 years.

Lana Mohammed, a local buyer, said she is delighted the market sells handbags and other merchandise with traditional designs.

“These unique designs are beautiful and have a sense of Kurdish culture,” she told Kurdistan 24.

Mohammed added that the designs were fashionable for young people who are always looking for trendy products.

The shop owner, Aram Ismael, said over the past few years, people, especially the youth, are becoming more attracted to a traditional, handmade style of fashion.

“Most women come to the shop with expensive leather handbags and purses ready to buy and use the handmade cultural ones instead,” Ismael told Kurdistan 24.

The Dry Pond attracts many local customers as well as others across the Kurdistan Region who want to whet their appetite for cultural, embroidered, and hand-crafted merchandise that has a sense of their own history and tradition attached to it.
