Germany sends new military shipment to the Kurdistan Region

The German Defense Ministry recently announced the delivery of a new military shipment for the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The German Defense Ministry recently announced the delivery of a new military shipment for the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces.

A statement by the German Army (Bundeswehr) on Oct. 29 revealed new shipment of counter Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and medical supplies had been delivered to the Kurdistan Region in support of the Peshmerga forces.

“An Ilyushin IL-76 Aircraft delivered the military and medical assistance to Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region, following a stop at Baghdad International Airport,” the statement added.

The report said Peshmerga forces were also given various spare parts for “Wolf” vehicles while dozens of the “Wolf” vehicles had already been delivered to the Kurdish forces.

The Bundeswehr statement revealed the same type of military and medical assistance were also delivered to the Iraqi government.

The components of the shipment were handed over to Baghdad and Erbil on the basis of not supplying equipment to third parties, and that they are used exclusively for their intended purpose, the statement concluded.

According to German officials, Germany has provided 90 million euros (over 100 million USD) of military support to Peshmerga forces in the battle against the Islamic State (IS).

Germany is one of the countries involved in the US-led anti-IS coalition that has provided military support to the Kurdish forces in their battle to defeat the extremists.

Peshmerga officials say German anti-tank weapons have been highly effective in detonating IS suicide-bomb vehicles on the front lines.

On Oct. 17, Peshmerga and Iraqi forces began an operation to liberate Mosul, the last IS-stronghold in Iraq, from the insurgents.
