ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – On Tuesday, the official campaign promoting the upcoming referendum on independence for the Kurdistan Region was launched in Erbil.
The people of the Kurdistan Region will go to the polls on Sep. 25 for what has been labelled a ‘historic day’, to decide on whether to remain a part of Iraq or secede and become a newly-formed independent state.
The Independent High Election and Referendum Commission (IHERC) previously announced the campaign would kick off on Sep. 5 and will run until Sep. 22.
Late Monday night, people gathered near the Erbil Citadel and expressed their support for the upcoming referendum.
People were seen waving the Kurdistan flag and chanting various slogans in support of independence for the Kurdistan Region.
“The people of the Kurdistan Region deserve an independent state after centuries of struggle. Let’s end subjugation by voting in favor of independence on September 25,” one of the demonstrators told Kurdistan 24 during a live broadcast.
Despite concerns from Baghdad, neighboring countries and the US regarding the timing of the event, senior Kurdish officials have insisted on holding the referendum as planned, stating Baghdad and the international community offer no guarantees for the rights of the Kurdistan Region’s people should they delay the event.
An independent and sovereign state of Kurdistan has been the dream for nearly all 40 million Kurds across the globe. Kurds have been labeled the largest stateless nation in the world.
