MOSCOW, Russia (Kurdistan24) – Senior Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) officials on Friday attended a conference on the Middle East in Moscow reiterating that Kurdish-brokered federalism was the perfect solution to end the civil war in Syria.

Speaking to Kurdistan24, Asya Abdullah, the co-chair of the dominant Kurdish political party in Syria the Democratic Union Party (PYD), said Kurdish-brokered federalism was a successful experience in the country.

“The Federalism of Northern Syria can find solutions for the conflict and crisis in the country,” she said.

Additionally, Abdullah pointed out Turkey, which is concerned with growing Kurdish sway in Syria, could not stop the advance of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against the Islamic State (IS).

“Turkey will accept the fact that [SDF] gains international support in its operation against IS in Syria,” she stated.

“Any decision related to the Raqqa operation belongs to SDF, and the international coalition against [IS] and Turkey do not have a hand over this operation,” Abdullah added.

The Syrian Kurds have suddenly emerged from relative obscurity to become a potential game-changer in the country’s civil war that broke out in 2011.

Moreover, they have become the focus of attention of superpowers including Russia and the US.

Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed Moscow had been mediating talks between the Syrian Kurds and Bashar al-Assad’s regime to help maintain the sovereignty of the country.

“Russia makes efforts to establish a common understanding between the Syrian government and the Syrian Kurds for the sake of a united Syria,” Lavrov said last week in an interview with Russia’s Izvestia Daily.
