475 families benefit from BCF food baskets during Ramadan

The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) on Tuesday distributed food aid to 475 families in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province who had previously registered via the foundation’s hotline program during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) on Tuesday distributed food aid to 475 families in the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province who had previously registered via the foundation’s hotline program during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

The food packages were distributed in Duhok as the BCF delivered a medical batch to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Health Ministry on the same day, consisting of medical kits, antibiotic medications, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It also contains medical equipment such as respiratory and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors, eye-testing kits, and birthing beds.

In a press conference, Abdulwaheed Atroushi, the head of Duhok’s BCF Branch, said it initiated a Korek Telecom-sponsored project in coordination with the Swiss Lutheran World Federation (LWF) to distribute 475 food baskets to people in need in Duhok province. He added that the food aid was being delivered to those who previously contacted the foundation via its hotline.

The organization established the BCF Food Hotline in response to the COVID-19 pandemic curfews that negatively reduced the daily earnings of low-income families.

The BCF also delivered food to areas where large numbers of coronavirus cases were confirmed.

In Duhok province, the BCF has 15,281 beneficiaries via the hotline, according to Atroushi.

The foundation also provides financial assistance to orphans in Duhok. “As of today, $45,000 has been paid to orphans in Duhok province,” Atroushi revealed. The food and financial assistance have been distributed to all people in need regardless of nationality or ethnicity, he added.

“We participated and shared a number of food baskets to people in need as a response to COVID-19,” Awaz Saeed Shawkat, the director of the LWF program, said.

On Monday, the BCF announced the delivery of food aid to 500 families in need in Kirkuk province in coordination with the Korek Telecom Company. It also began to distribute the salaries of over 740 orphans in Kirkuk.

The BCF is one of the most active humanitarian NGOs in Kurdistan that often provides a substantial amount of aid to internally displaced persons and refugees in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and northern Syria, as well as multiple programs to enrich the lives of displaced children.

The organization was founded in 2005 and, in its own words, “strives to honor the great legacy of Malla Mustafa Barzani, the leader of the Kurdish Liberation Movement and influencer of the contemporary Kurdish nation.”
