Erbil ends four-game winless run with 2-0 home victory in Iraqi Premier League

The win ends a four-match winless run (one draw, three losses) and moves Erbil to the top half of the table.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Erbil Sports Club ended a four-game run without a win after they beat Amanat Baghdad 2-0 in week 13 of the Iraqi Premier League on Tuesday.

There was a goal in each half for Erbil with captain Miran Khesro opening the scoring for the Kurdistan Region club after 15 minutes before Thyago Amaral added a second late in the match with an 82-minute strike.

The win ends a four-match winless run (one draw, three losses) and moves Erbil to the top half of the table in ninth place with 16 points.

Kurdistan 24 spoke with goalscorer Khesro who said Erbil's players are satisfied that they were able to end their winless streak.

“We played a very good match and our coaches were happy with our performance. These three points were very important for us this season. We want to thank our fans for their support and urge them to keep cheering us on,” he said.

The Iraqi Premier League’s winter break coincides with the opening of the transfer window. Khesro said the club is hoping to bolster its squad with quality players that can help Erbil achieve its goals for the rest of the season.

“Erbil is looking for experienced players who can help our team move forward and contribute to our success,” he told Kurdistan 24. “We hope to move to the top of the table after the 50-day break.”

One of the league’s most successful football clubs, Erbil withdrew from Iraq’s Premier League during the 2016-17 season due to financial issues.

They have been crowned Iraqi Premier League champions four times, most recently in the 2011-12 season when they only lost one match.

Erbil’s next match in the Iraqi Premier League is away to Al-Najaf on Jan. 31, 2019, when the league restarts.
