Kurdistan security raid hideout in Halabja, kill some 'terrorists'

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) on Tuesday revealed security forces raided a hideout, confiscated documents, and killed and injured some terrorists in Halabja Province.

In a statement, the KRSC mentioned the people of Halabja had informed the Council some suspicious militants had been seen in the area.

On Nov. 19, clashes erupted between the security forces and terrorists near Sirwan River and Boin village.

“As a result, security forces killed and injured some terrorists as well as confiscated their hideout, documents, and weapons,” the statement read.

The report also noted three security personnel’s were slightly injured in the raid, but their health condition was stable.

Halabja was previously a district of Sulaimani. In 2014, the district was promoted as the fourth province of the Kurdistan Region.

The KRSC also stated they would publish further information about the group with some evidence as it became available.

However, the statement did not mention whether the group had any relations with the so-called Islamic State (IS).

IS occupied Mosul in June 2014, the second-largest city in Iraq.

The extremist group shortly expanded to other provinces in Iraq including Nineveh, Diyala, Salahaddin, and Anbar. Since then, the group had lost large swaths of territory and continued to shrink.

On Oct. 17, Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces launched a military operation to liberate Mosul which insurgents had labeled the capital of their self-claimed Caliphate.

The operation is largely supported by the US-led coalition warplanes that continuously shell IS positions inside the city.
