The individuals responsible for the Ankawa terror attack were given sentences by a Kurdistan Region court on Monday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The individuals responsible for the Ankawa terror attack had their hearing at Kurdistan Region on Monday.

Erbil Criminal Court sentenced seven members of the Islamic State (IS) to death and sentenced 10 others to life in prison.

The verdicts follow the planning and perpetrating of a “terror attack” in the town of Ankawa in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

The 17 convicted perpetrators were arrested by the Kurdistan Region Security Council’s (KRSC) Directorate of Counter-Terrorism, who had links to the plot near the US General Consulate in Erbil.

On April 17, 2016, a suicide car bomb exploded in front of a café in Ankawa resulting in the death of three civilians and wounding five others.

Following the explosion, IS claimed responsibility for the attack.

On June 1, the KRSC revealed the identity of the four IS members they arrested in Kirkuk Province.

During a security operation in Kirkuk, Kurdistan Region Security forces captured the insurgents guilty of many terrorist activities in the province, the KRSC announced in a statement.

The Kurdistan Region Security has conducted several intelligence operations in the past leading to the arrest and death of several senior IS leaders and members.
