Explosion in Syrian Kurdish Qamishlo kills two security members

QAMISHLO, Syrian Kurdistan (Kurdistan24) – An explosion on Sunday morning hit the Kurdish city of Qamishlo in northern Syria, killing two security members, said a Kurdistan24 correspondent.

Following the explosion, ambulances rushed to the scene and transferred the wounded people to the nearby hospitals.

The blast was caused by a planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Iskanderiya area located in the Khelij neighborhood of Qamishlo.

The IED detonated at 8:30 in the morning.

The explosion killed two security members from the city and wounded two other security personnel.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Qamishlo, in Hasaka Province, is located on the northern Syrian border with Turkey close to the Kurdish city of Nusaybin.

The province borders with Turkey and the Kurdistan Region.

Qamishlo previously had a population of nearly one million people before the Syrian civil war and emergence of the Islamic State (IS) in the country.

Since then, a large number of the population were forcibly displaced to neighboring countries.

On Oct. 3, 2016, an IS suicide-bomber attacked a Kurdish wedding near Hasaka in Syrian Kurdistan.

During a live televised interview, the Co-chair of the Council for Health in the self-declared Kurdish Canton of Jazira Abir Hasaf told Kurdistan24 34 people were killed and 95 others wounded in the attack.

Almost all of the victims of the IS attack were civilians, Hasaf added.

Following the attack, the extremist group claimed responsibility in an online statement circulated on social media networks.

Hasaka is now under the control of the US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) after they drove off Syrian regime forces in August 2016 clashes.
