Wild boars' rampage kills three IS, injures five

KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) - A herd of wild boars killed three Islamic State (IS) fighters and injured five others in Kirkuk, Kurdistan Region, according to locals.

The jihadists were hidden in a bed of reeds near fields in the Harmin mountains, some 55 miles southwest of Kirkuk, when the animals went on a rampage near a farmland in al-Rashad region.

The situation is ironic since IS members consider boars "dirty" animals whose meat is "haram," banned by Islamic law.

The extremists were hoping to ambush local tribes who had fled to the mountains when IS attacked the town of Hawija in 2014.

The local tribes had formed anti-IS brigades.

IS has reportedly tried to kill the animals in revenge, but further details were not available.

For the past six months, Peshmerga and Iraqi forces have been focused on fighting the IS in Mosul, IS' de facto capital in Iraq.

In mid-2014 extremists attacked Iraq and Syria to establish a self-proclaimed Khalifa in "Iraq and Lavant."
