Peshmerga official: Helicopters for Peshmerga essential part of coalition-KRG reform plan

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) endorses plans to restructure the Peshmerga forces which are scheduled to be implemented starting July 2017.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) endorses plans to restructure the Peshmerga forces which are scheduled to be implemented starting July 2017.

On May 14, the Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers convened in Erbil to endorse two different proposals presented by the Ministries of Peshmerga Affairs and Interior for reform efforts in the Region.

One of the proposals approved by the KRG cabinet was a 35-point project to restructure the Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan Region prepared by the Ministry of Peshmerga in support of the Global Coalition.

According to Kareem Sinjari, the acting Minister of Peshmerga, the KRG plan is of strategic importance for the Ministry to establish a modern armed force for the Kurdistan Region.

Secretary General of the Peshmerga Ministry Jabar Yawar on Tuesday told Kurdistan24 the reform plan had been submitted to the Kurdistan Region Presidency to be endorsed by President Masoud Barzani.

Sixteen points from the reform plan had been prepared by the Ministry of Peshmerga, and the rest were recommended by US, German, and British military advisors, Yawar stated.

Yawar added that one of the main points in the reform plan was providing helicopters for transferring wounded Peshmerga fighters on the frontlines.

He also explained the helicopters would help supply logistical support to the ground forces.

The plan will help establish a unified Peshmerga force, draw a common security strategy for all security forces in the Kurdistan Region, and create a common military doctrine, Yawar concluded.
