Kurds to hold a massive independence festival in Germany’s Cologne

Kurdish organizations in Germany have started preparations to hold a huge festival in support of the Kurdistan Region independence referendum which is planned to be held in Sep. 25, 2017.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Kurdish organizations in Germany have started preparations to hold a large festival in support of the Kurdistan Region independence referendum which is planned to be held in Sep. 25, 2017.

Kurdish Community in Germany is one of the organizations that have been involved in organizing the event. “The festival will be hosted on August 26, and we’re expecting over 20,000 Kurds to attend,” the Deputy Head of the organization Mehmet Tanriverdi told Kurdistan24 on Saturday.

Kurdish European Society and Komkar are two other organizations among 13 other Kurdish groups that cooperate to organize the event.

“The purpose of this event is to show the support of the Kurds in the diaspora to the Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum. We call on the KRG to include the Kurds abroad to participate in the historic event,” Tanriverdi said.

He also mentioned that the festival is meant to deliver the message of the Kurdish people to the German government.

Kurds from the Greater Kurdistan who are originally from Turkey’s Kurdistan [Bakur], Iranian Kurdistan [Rojhelat], Syrian Kurdistan [Rojava], and Iraqi Kurdistan Region [Bashur] would participate in the festival, according to the organizers.

Kurds are arguably the largest stateless nation in the world, estimated to be over 40 million, mostly settled in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria.

Establishing a Kurdish independent state has been a long-awaited dream of almost all the Kurds around the world.

“The people of the Kurdistan Region have the right to decide on their future whether they want to remain as part of Iraq or secede from the rest of the country,” President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani said before, stating there is no turning back in holding the referendum.

On Saturday, President Barzani met with the referendum committee members in Erbil which consists the representative of all parties in the Kurdistan Region, except Gorran and Kurdistan Islamic Group.
