518 Iraqi civilians killed during the month of July: UN

During the month of July, 241 civilians were killed and 277 more injured due to violence, terrorism, and armed conflict in Iraq.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – During the month of July, 241 civilians were killed and 277 more injured due to violence, terrorism, and armed conflict in Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) stated on Tuesday.

Nineveh was the most affected province, with 233 casualties of which 121 were civilians, and 112 wounded. Baghdad was the second hardest hit area with 38 killed and 85 more injured.

Anbar comes in the third with 33 civilians killed and 49 more wounded, according to the UNAMI statement.

The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq Ján Kubiš condemned the terrorist attacks carried out by the Islamic State (IS) on civilians in Mosul in early July, as they used people as human shield.

“As we commend the Iraqi forces’ humanitarian concept of operations that has put civilian protection and assistance to IDPs at the center of the battle plan for Mosul, it is imperative that the protection of civilians continues to be the top priority in the conduct of military operations going forward,” he stated.

Fourteen years have passed since the removal of a dictatorial system in Iraq in 2003, and yet the country continues to suffer from instability and terrorist attacks carried out in different parts of the country, especially in Baghdad.
