Kurdistan Region declares mourning week for passing of Jalal Talabani

"Mam Jalal's passing is a huge loss for Kurdistan, Iraq, and the entire region."

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Senior Kurdistan Region officials and politicians sent their condolences to the family of Jalal Talabani following his death on Tuesday.

In a televised speech, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani sent condolences to the people of Kurdistan and family members of the General-Secretary of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and former Iraqi President Talabani for his death.

“For the passing of Mam Jalal, I declare one-week of mourning across the Kurdistan Region,” President Barzani stated.

The President also sent his special condolences to Talabani’s two sons, Qubad and Bafel, as well as his wife Hero Ibrahim Ahmed.

“The best loyalty for Mam Jalal’s soul and the souls of all Kurdistan’s martyrs is to strengthen unity toward achieving the sacred objective our leaders and martyrs have sacrificed for,” the President stated.

In a separate statement, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani sent his condolences to the people of Kurdistan, the PUK, and Talabani’s family members.

Talabani’s passing “is a huge loss for Kurdistan, Iraq, and the entire region,” the Prime Minister said.

Salahadin Bahadin, the leader of the Islamic Union of Kurdistan, expressed his sadness at Talabani’s death.

Bahadin added that the late Talabani was “a unique political leader who became successful in the struggle for his nation during his years as a Peshmerga, during the [Kurdish] revolutions, and in leading a state.”

“I'm saddened to learn of the passing of President Mam Jalal,” Masrour Barzani, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council, said in a statement. “My heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and people of Kurdistan.”
