Airstrikes cripple jihadists in Khazir front leaving four militants dead

At least three airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) targeted two different strongholds of the militants in Khazir front, southeast of Mosul, on Friday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (K24) - At least three airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) targeted two different strongholds of the militants in Khazir front, southeast of Mosul, on Friday.

On Friday, Islamic State (IS) positions became the target of coalition airstrikes in Khazir front. According to an announcement released by Peshmerga forces, in a series of at least three bombardments, warplanes destroyed two extremist’s bases near Tal Aswad village, and between Wardak and Kalapuri villages respectively.

The statement adds that in the result of the attacks at least four IS militants were killed. Khazir is located about 35 kilometers to the southeast of Mosul and 60 kilometers to the west of Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region.

Since June 2014, after the fall of Mosul to the hands of IS, Khazir front line has been a strategic target for the jihadists due to its short distance to Erbil.

Recently, in a successful military operation, Kurdish Peshmerga forces in coordination with U.S.-led coalition jets liberated the Kurdish town of Sinjar, located in northern Iraq.

Following the liberation of Sinjar, extremists have repeatedly attempted to test the stretch of frontlines with the Kurdistan Region in Khazir and other fronts, but all their attacks have been repelled by Peshmerga forces and coalition airstrikes.
