British Secretary of State Boris Johnson sent his best wishes to Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani in honor of Newroz, expressing the UK’s support for a stable future for the Kurdistan Region.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – British Secretary of State Boris Johnson sent his best wishes to Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani in honor of Newroz, expressing the UK’s support for a stable future for the Kurdistan Region.

In a message addressed to Barzani and the people of the Kurdistan Region, Johnson recalled the role and sacrifices of the Region in the fight against the Islamic State (IS). He also highlighted their hospitality in receiving over a million of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), according to a Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) statement released on Saturday.

The British official asserted the timing is now apt to build a more stable, democratic, and developed future for the Kurdistan Region, stating the UK looks forward to helping the semi-autonomous region achieve this goal, the statement added.

He also mentioned that he hopes to see Barzani later this year in London, sharing wishes for a joyful and prosperous year for the Kurdistan Region.

Earlier last week, British Prime Minister Theresa May also congratulated Kurds on the occasion of Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, and wished the Kurdish community a peaceful year.

“Newroz presents an opportunity for all Kurds to come together, celebrate and reflect on past achievements,” she said. “In marking this significant event, we wish for the coming year to be one of peace, harmony, and compassion, and hope for a world that further advances universal human rights, social justice, and freedom of expression.”

Every year, Kurds all around the world hold a three-day long celebration for Newroz, starting on March 21. It marks the first day of the Kurdish New Year, which celebrated the year 2718 this time. During Newroz, Kurds light fires as a symbol of freedom from tyranny.

Newroz is one of the more nationalistic events, with growing popularity and festivities that become more and more sophisticated every year.
