ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – As political tensions between Iraqi parties increase over allegations of electoral fraud, the Iraqi Presidency has called on all sides to respect the constitution and the country’s laws.

A statement released by the Presidency Office on Tuesday said President Fuad Masum was following the latest developments related to the results of the parliamentary elections “with great importance and attention.”

The statement explained that these developments included allegations related to fraud as well as violations or interference which affected the elections results at certain ballot stations.

“The Iraqi Presidency calls on all relevant authorities including the electoral commission to comply fully with the provisions of the constitution and laws [in regards to allegations of fraud],” the statement added.

The Presidency also stressed the need to find all necessary ways according to the law to review the appeals and all other issues related to the elections.

“The President [Masum] is eager to take all necessary measures to maintain the safety of the democratic process in accordance with the constitution in a way that protects the country’s high national interests,” the statement explained.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi President held a meeting with his three deputies (Nouri al-Maliki, Ayad Allawi, and Osama al-Nujaifi) to discuss developments related to the recent parliamentary elections held on May 12.

In the meeting, the officials invited all commissions and relevant authorities, including the electoral commission, to commit to the constitution and laws regarding the elections results.
