ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A family in Kirkuk received the Jamadani (Scarf) of Kurdish activist Ramin Hossein Panahi in honor of naming their newborn after him on the same day Panahi was executed in Iran.

After months of international condemnation of an Iranian death sentence given to the  Kurdish activist, Panahi was executed on Sept. 8.

His conviction was based on claims he was a member of the armed Kurdish opposition group Komala. However, no evidence was presented that link Panahi to the crimes he was charged with, which include murder.

In April, Iran’s Supreme Court approved the sentence.

As Iran hanged Panahi on Sept. 8, a Kurdish family in Kirkuk named their baby, who was born on the same day of his execution, after him as a tribute to the soul of the Kurdish activist.

On Saturday, Panahi’s brother visited the Kurdish family in Kirkuk and gave the scarf Ramin wore in a well-known photograph to the newborn Kurdish baby.

In recent years, Iran has proven to be one of the leading nations in carrying out the death penalty against its citizens. Of the 993 people executed globally in 2017, 507 of them were in Iran, according to Amnesty.
